4.8 Perspectives on Issues Critical to CMI Implementation The questionnaires solicited school administratorsˇ¦ and teachersˇ¦ views on some frequently discussed issues concerning the implementation of CMI. They were asked to respond to the extent to which they agree with a statement using a five-point Likert scale. The results indicate that their views are similar, except for the fact that there is, in general, a greater proportion of teachers than administrators taking a neutral position. (See Table 4.8.) ˇ@ Table 4.8: Administratorsˇ¦ and Teachersˇ¦ Views on Issues concerning CMI Implementation
The perception of the majority of respondents suggests that the use of CMI has brought about more effective instruction. Students are more motivated to learn and higher levels of learning are achieved. However, respondents hold that the potential benefits of using CMI have not been fully realized, since that would also require coordinated changes in curriculum content and assessment. In addition, the quality of Chinese-medium textbooks is less than desirable, for many of them are not written specifically for CMI but are translated from English. The majority of respondents also perceive parentsˇ¦ preference for EMI over CMI to be a major factor impeding the latterˇ¦s development in schools. ˇ@ |
